Artist Bio
Shiyu Kato is a contemporary Japanese ceramicist attributed to the Jihei Kiln, part of a historic lineage tracing back to early Seto potters who influenced the development of Kyō‑yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki in Kyoto. As the 15th generation of the Jihei family, Kato continues this centuries-old tradition, creating vessels that balance functional form with subtle, hand-shaped irregularities. His work reflects the quiet elegance of Kyoto ceramics, emphasizing tactile surfaces, muted glazes, and thoughtfully considered proportions. Favoured by collectors for their understated presence and historical resonance, Kato’s pieces bridge heritage and contemporary practice, offering vessels that are both practical and meditative.
