Mug by Sato Akari 佐藤朱理
This mug by Sato Akari showcases her signature textured ceramic surface and unique glaze technique. The clay body is softly shaped with modest curves for a comfortable hold, while the glaze finish offers a subtle, handmade charm — slight irregularities and natural variations in tone and texture make each mug feel like a one‑of‑a‑kind object. The result is a vessel that merges practicality with contemplative design, ideal for tea, coffee, or daily ritual use.
About the Artist
Sato Akari was born in 1981 in Sapporo, Japan. After university she trained and graduated from a ceramics program in Gifu (in 2013), and since then has been based in Gifu Prefecture, creating pottery under her own name. Her work is distinguished by a thoughtful use of glazes — often using a special “rakuyaki” glaze — to bring out texture and depth in clay, yielding pieces that feel organic, tactile, and quietly expressive. She combines simple forms with experimental glaze techniques, aiming for ceramics that balance everyday utility with subtle artistry.
His bowls, cups, and vessels reflect a balance between functionality and contemplative beauty — humble, tactile, and alive with subtle irregularity, inviting everyday moments to become thoughtful rituals.
