Deep Bowl by Akihiro Nikaido 二階堂明弘
This deep bowl by Nikaido is a compelling example of his philosophy: simplicity, natural clay beauty, and careful form. The interior and exterior surfaces bear the subtle textures and tones of high‑fired clay, offering a muted, earthy surface that invites tactile appreciation. The bowl’s walls are thin but sturdy, balancing lightness and durability; its generous depth makes it ideal for soups, rice dishes, or anything that benefits from a bowl with presence and character.
Because Nikaido often leaves vessels unglazed or minimally glazed (yakishime), the clay’s raw warmth and organic irregularities are visible — giving each bowl a distinct individuality. When used, the bowl doesn’t just hold food; it frames it, letting colors and textures of what’s served stand out against the clay’s natural backdrop.
About the Artist
Akihiro Nikaido (二階堂 明弘) is a contemporary Japanese ceramicist known for his mastery of form, texture, and natural glazes. Born in 1977 in Sapporo, Japan, he studied ceramics at Bunka Gakuin College of Art and has since developed a distinctive style that emphasizes simplicity, materiality, and quiet elegance.
Many of his works are crafted using yakishime, a high-fired, unglazed technique that highlights the raw beauty of clay and allows each piece to develop character over time. Nikaido often draws inspiration from nature and the life cycle of clay, creating vessels that invite contemplation while remaining highly functional.
