Artist Bio

Born in 1974 in Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Toru Kikuchi trained at the Ibaraki Prefectural Ceramic Institute and apprenticed under master potter Sadanari Fujimoto before establishing his independent practice in the early 2000s. Working from his studio in Kasama, a town with a rich pottery tradition, Kikuchi’s ceramics emphasize spontaneity, subtle asymmetry, and the natural textures of clay. Each piece is hand-shaped and finished, allowing variations in form and glaze to emerge, creating one-of-a-kind objects that balance functionality with sculptural presence. His work is celebrated by collectors and galleries alike for its quiet elegance, tactile warmth, and the thoughtful interaction it encourages between object and user.
