Brass Tilting Plate by Ryo Watanabe 渡辺 遼
A sculptural object defined by gentle imbalance, this tilting plate is crafted from solid brass and shaped with meticulous care. Its form evokes a small boat leaning on water, while the smooth surface catches light and patina naturally over time. Versatile in function, it can serve as a decorative accent, a small tray, or even as an incense holder, where the subtle slope allows ashes or incense cones to rest elegantly. The plate reflects Watanabe’s approach to combining quiet geometry with organic warmth, creating pieces that are both tactile and contemplative.

Artist Bio
Born in 1978 in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, Ryo Watanabe studied Spatial and Environmental Design at Musashino Art University, graduating in 2001. Early in his career, he honed his skills in traditional metalworking, developing a deep understanding of form, weight, and material behavior.
Watanabe’s work explores the intersection of functionality and sculpture. Drawing inspiration from natural forms—stones, seeds, and pebbles—he shapes metals such as brass, iron, and aluminum into objects that are simultaneously tactile, balanced, and subtly expressive. His designs often reinterpret everyday vessels, trays, and plates into meditative forms, blending utility with quiet artistry.
Recognized for his precision and sensibility, Watanabe’s pieces are favored by galleries and collectors alike for their restrained elegance and the way they transform everyday materials into objects of contemplation.
